Best Dressed: Cannes Film Festival 2019
The annual Cannes Film Festival took place this year from the 14th to the 25th of May. Founded in 1946, this invitation-only festival showcases new films from all genres and from all over the world. This year, the festival’s greatest honour- the Palme d’Or- was awarded to South Korean film ‘Parasite’ by a jury presided over by Mexican film maker and Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu.
Although, over time, the festival has become arguably one of the most important film events of the year, it stands apart from the other festivals in the ‘Big Three’ (which includes Berlin and Venice) because it uniquely functions as ‘film’s own fashion week’. With each coming year, Cannes seems ever more fashion-focused, exemplified by how fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier was appointed a jury member in 2012 and how Chopard and L’Oreal are consistently headline sponsors. Each year, we, the public, are treated to hundreds of photographs of our favourite celebrities on the Crosiette, their couture pieces and suntanned faces framed by the Mediterranean in the background. Below, I pin down the most striking celebrity looks from this year’s red carpet.
1. Aja Naomi King
The ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ actress attended the premiere of ‘A Hidden Life’ in an ethereal Zac Posen gown which had layers of tulle that created a dramatic, full silhouette. The plunging neckline added a touch of sensuality and the look was topped off by jewellery by Messika.
2. Elle Fanning
Elle Fanning was the ‘belle of the ball’ in this stunning Dior ensemble at the ‘Once Upon A Time’ premiere. She oozed old Hollywood glamour in a look that included a black tulle skirt and an organza blouse teamed with an Agent Provocateur nude corset, with a wide-brimmed hat to round of her Grace Kelly-esque look.
3. Helen Mirren
Pictured at the screening of ‘Les Plus Belles Annees D'Une Vie’, Dame Helen Mirren shone in a sequined Elie Saab gown paired with glittering earrings. Although her dress was gorgeous, the most shocking part of her ensemble was the matching cotton candy pink hair she sported along with it. The outfit cut an understated silhouette, but her pink hairdo ensured that she stood out regardless.
5. Julianne Moore
Julianne Moore turned heads in an elegant emerald ensemble at the opening night of the festival. The Oscar-winning actress looked effortlessly chic in a Dior gown that showcased her décolletage with its organza off-the-shoulder sleeves. The strapless neckline, column silhouette and cape detail, all made for extremely elegant and simple attire.
6. Shailene Woodley
At the premiere of the new film ‘Rocketman’, Shailene Woodley took red carpet fashion to an entirely new level in an outfit that comes straight from the Dior Spring/Summer 2019 Haute Couture runway. The actress paired short black shorts with a long tuxedo jacket, later unfastening the jacket to allow us to get a glimpse of the finer details of the blouse. The outfit, embellished with silver feathery earrings, killed the red carpet game.
