Review: Miu Miu SS19
Miu Miu's showing of its SS 2019 collection was held at the Palais d’Iéna in Paris Fashion Week.
Although Miuccia Prada’s latest collection is perhaps darker and more mature than some of her previous seasons, the brand still plays with the weird quirks that distinguish Miu Miu from other labels. At first glance, the collection has a cold tone to it, making use of a pale colour palette, with black and cool blue denim running throughout. The whole aesthetic is made edgier with the chunky platforms and accessories that top off the looks. Opaque calf length socks alongside minimal makeup contrasts with the pastel girlish looks of previous Miu Miu collections. Yet, these cooler aspects combine with softer elements such as bursts of millennial pink and details of bows and roses, creating a perfect equilibrium.
This can be seen in one of the collection’s most striking standout pieces, a pink leather coat. The feminine jacket is played off against the model’s buzzcut, white knee-high white socks and oversized mask-like sunglasses, ensuring the look as a whole remains anything but conventional. Considering that Miu Miu as a brand is hardly known for its classic looks, some pieces from SS19 might eve be considered conservative.
But Miu Miu never relies on the completely traditional, and many of the pieces in this collection are made with less conventional materials and daring clashes of colour. Mesh, leather, PVC, organza and distressed denim feature heavily throughout the collection, as well as bold animal prints.
This can be demonstrated in the leather suit style jacket and mid-length skirt look (see above). The cut and tailoring itself may not break any boundaries, but the choice of black leather is unexpected when paired with a mesh blouse and stacked platforms, In effect, the outfit becomes far more powerful and rebellious. For Miu Miu, a suit is never just a suit.
Overall, the traditional feminine silhouettes of mid-length skirts, suits and dresses are modernised when paired with bleached buzzcuts, towering platforms and bold colour choices. Miu Miu has once again succeeded in its unique interpretation of feminine pieces.
