Great costumes have the ability to make a film truly iconic and memorable. We take a look at some of film’s greatest fashion moments.
1. Kiera Knightley as Cecilia Tallis – Atonement (2007)
Earning designer Jacqueline Durran an Academy Award nomination, Cecilia’s green gown is the defining costume of the 2007 adaptation of Ian McEwan’s book. From the film’s infamous library scene, the emerald green colour alludes to jealousy and temptation, two of the film’s overriding themes.
2. Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz – Clueless (1995)
’90s classic ‘Clueless’ is host to an array of iconic outfits, the most recognisable being Cher’s bright yellow checkered suit and white knee-high socks combo.
3. Julia Roberts as Vivian Ward – Pretty Woman (1990)
This off-the-shoulder red gown marked one of the most pivotal moments in the film and Vivian’s transformation into a sophisticated lady. Paired with white gloves and elegant jewellery, it made for a timeless look.
4. Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
Ferris Bueller was the epitome of ’80s cool, with the outfit to match. Pairing a geometric patterned woollen waistcoat with blue slacks and a black and white leather jacket, Ferris made viewers as envious of his outfit as of his day off.
5. Diane Keaton as Annie Hall – Annie Hall (1977)
Styled by Ruth Morely, but wearing items from Keaten’s own wardrobe, Annie is the ultimate tomboy. Thanks to her penchant for vintage men’s clothing and baggy trousers, men’s fashion became a major trend for women in the late 1970s.
6. Beyoncé Knowles as Deena Jones – Dreamgirls (2006)
Dreamgirls is the go-to film for those looking for ’60s and ’70s glam inspiration. In this scene, Deena and the Dreams perform in multi-coloured flared jumpsuits for their disco rendition of ‘One Night Only’.
7. Judd Nelson as John Bender – The Breakfast Club (1985)
The whole cast had iconic outfits, but our favourite is that of the “criminal”, Bender. An oversized grey coat layered over a denim jacket, layered over a plaid shirt, layered over a white tee made for one of the most recognisable looks of ’80s teen cinema.
8. Prince as The Kid – Purple Rain (1984)
The film, heavily influenced by Prince’s own creative vision, features some of his boldest looks, with the white ruffled blouse under the purple suit becoming a classic Prince look.
9. Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei Lee – Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)
Designed by William Travilla, Marilyn’s hot pink dress was worn during her ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ sequence and became one of her most recognisable looks. We absolutely adore the matching satin gloves and heavy jewels.
10. Vanessa Bell as Imani Izzi – Coming to America (1988)
Channeled by Beyoncé at the 2015 Met Gala, Imani’s gold leaf gown and high ponytail combo was by far the most stunning look of the film. Worn with chunky gold jewellery, it became an iconic scene stealer. Beyoncé and husband Jay Z also channeled the film for their 2015 Halloween costumes.
